A Bold Idea, Rooted in Nature: How the Blue Green Connector Took Shape

What if we could restore a stretch of the Little Conestoga Creek floodplain — right beside the historic Conestoga House on Marietta Avenue — to its wild, natural beauty?

That was the question that sparked the vision for the Blue Green Connector.

Reclaiming What Was Lost

The idea began simply: a desire to help the polluted creek and bring back the wetlands, meadows, and forests that once thrived along it.

These historic landscapes weren’t just beautiful — they were vital ecosystems that filtered water, provided habitat, and helped manage flooding. Restoring even a portion of that could make a meaningful difference.

But as the team looked upstream and downstream, another question emerged: Why stop there?

They found more places ready to be renewed. One by one, new sites were added to the plan — and a bigger vision began to take shape.

More Than a Restoration

What’s emerging isn’t just a cleaner creek or a restored floodplain.
It’s a living corridor for wildlife, a haven for birds and pollinators, a place where native plants can take root again — and where clean water flows freely.

And it’s not just for the benefit of the natural world.

A Vision for the Whole Community

Could everyone experience this beauty?
The answer was a resounding yes.

  • Yes to an accessible trail winding through the landscape
  • Yes to interactive exhibits and public art that make learning fun
  • Yes to research partnerships that measure our impact and help others learn from our work

This dream is already becoming reality, thanks to strong community support.

The Community Behind the Connector

  • 40 landowners have granted easements for the future trail
  • 4 municipalities are working together on a shared watershed plan
  • And more than half of the funds needed have already been raised

This is what happens when a community comes together around a shared vision — not just to protect nature, but to build something extraordinary.
