Research on the Trail

The Blue Green Connector is an active research site!

The Blue Green Connector is an active research site!  Through the leadership of Franklin & Marshall College’s Chesapeake Watershed Initiative (CWI), the Little Conestoga Creek is the focus of study for researchers seeking to expand our understanding of environmental restoration.

CWI studies the legacy of human impacts on floodplains within the Chesapeake Watershed and applies its findings through targeted action in Lancaster County.

Get Involved

Researchers will:

  • Gain knowledge by conducting field experiments and collecting data.
  • Monitor the water quality of the Little Conestoga and the impacts of floodplain restoration for years to come.
  • Engage with the community to increase participation in research, restoration, and environmental stewardship.
  • Share what they learn to catalyze future restoration and improve best practices.

Research Goals:

CWI carries out its mission through a three-fold approach of researcheducation, and action.

  • Map the legacy of human impacts on streams and valley bottoms in the mid-Atlantic.
  • Understand the effects of colonial settlement, dam construction, dam removal, and restoration.
  • Use science-based visualization to improve understanding among policymakers and landowners.
  • Test hypotheses about the ecological and economic benefits of restoration.
  • Evaluate the impact of legacy sediment removal and quantify the success of restoration.
  • Use remote sensing (LIDAR) and economic approaches to identify streams for future restoration.
